Kevin and Nancy Dye are an ultimate local manifestation of the recent real estate boom. Not only did they purchase a 15-room mansion for $1.5 million last year, they’re also in the process of putting more money into the home, in the form of remodeling and an addition. It’s all part of a trend that has seen Roanoke real estate appreciate by more than 42 percent over the past five years, a figure slightly behind the national average of 56 percent, but more than double the rate of such Upper South growth metros such as Charlotte and Raleigh, both at about 20 percent over that five-year period.
